It’s OK to say NO

Do you feel that you are doing somebody’s tasks? On the job or at home?

You may want to say “NO!”, “I’m unable”, or even “I don’t want to.” Yet, we find ourselves unable to say ‘no’.

We feel the need to do ‘the thing’ because we may think that we will do it the better, that we don’t want to disappoint, or maybe because we do not know how to delegate.

First, think about why you cannot say no. Is it because of who is asking or because you are used to always accepting whatever is brought before you?

Second, think about how saying yes will affect you and how saying no will affect you.

Third, find a different way to say no in order to not feel like you are saying no. For example, instead of saying, “No” state, “I’m unable to accommodate that request right now. What I can do is…” Or, even, “Here is a resource to help you with that.”

It is okay to let go of the task and it will be the hardest thing to do. It is okay to accept that your way is not the only way. It is okay to help others learn. It is okay to give yourself grace by not doing the task.

You will be a happier and less stressed person, which will be a win-win for you and those around you.
