Campfire Rules

Nearly nine out of 10 wildfires in the United States are caused by people.

For those that grew up with Smokey the Bear, you know, “Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires, Only You.”

Here are some campfire tips that can be followed in order to prevent inadvertent fires:

  • Make sure campfires are allowed.
  • Follow burn bans in the areas.
  • Make sure it is not too windy.
  • Fire pits should be dug at least 10 feed away from overhanging branches.
  • Circle the fire pit with rocks and make sure that it is surrounded by dirt.
  • Extra wood should be upwind from the fire.
  • Throw the match into the fire after lighting it.
  • Do not leave a campfire unattended.
  • Keep a bucket of water and shovel nearby.
  • Only wood should go into the fire.
  • Do not pull sticks out of the fire.
  • Do not sit on the fire ring or rocks around the campfire.
  • When it is time to put the fire out, dump lots of water on it, stir it with a shovel, then dump more water on it.
  • Make sure the wood is COLD before leaving the campsite.

Reminder to kids to never matches, lighters, lighter fluid or other flammable liquids. There’s a link to Campfire Safety from Smokey the Bear.
