Common Types of Fraud

Anybody can be a target for fraudsters. Some forms of fraud are:

Identity Theft

Your information is used to obtain money, receive services, or obtain employment. Information is obtained by simply stealing a wallet or as complicated as a corporate data breach.

Computer Intrusion

Electronic devices are invaded. A call is received stating that they have detected errors and want to access your computer to fix them. They can either take control of your device or install spyware that allows the stealing of passwords to access your accounts.

Money Scams

A ‘grandchild” calls with an urgent need for cash because they are in trouble because of an arrest or an auto accident.

You may be told that you are a winner of a lottery and asked to pay the taxes, pay bank fees, or shipping before getting the funds.

Personally, I have received multiple emails from the FBI, Wells Fargo Bank, and TSA Agent, among others, claiming that I have money waiting for me and all I have to do is provide some information or send them a certain amount of dollars.
