Wilsonville resident receives Madrina de Salud award for serving the Latino community

The 2015 Latino Health Equity Conference was held to recognize talents, leadership, and best practices that change lives in the community.

Portland, Oregon- June 18, 2015 Familias en Acción (www.familiasenaccion.org) held its 6th Annual Latino Health Equity Conference at PSU. Three recipients were honored with the “Madrina de Salud” (godmother of health) award for their service to the Latino Community in the area of healthcare.

Members of the community, health professionals, advocates, researchers, educators, and leaders gathered in an effort to stimulate conversation and sow the seeds of change.

Oregon and Washington have done amazing work around health equity for Latinos and this talent was recognized. Gladys Monroy Boutwell, Wilsonville resident and Agent with PBP Insurance, was recognized for her focus on Latino health equity. “I am honored and humbled by this recognition,” states Gladys Monroy Boutwell about the award. The two other recipients were Annabelle LaVallie, Project Access NOW, and Shelley Yoder, School Outreach Coordinator at Providence Health & Services.

The Board of Direct Chair, Michael Reyes Andrillon of Northwest Health Foundation, did the honors of presenting the award. The recognition pointed out how Gladys Monroy Boutwell has been a great advocate for Latinos. Not only because she helped enrolled individuals and families in an insurance plan, but also because she took the time to make sure they understood their plan, benefits, and how to use the services. She encourages individuals to advocate for themselves and continues to make a positive impact in the Latino Community because she cares and enjoys helping those in need. She has proven that her love for her ‘gente’ is enormous. She has helped a lot of the Familias en Acción clients and has looked after them through the step-by-step process.

Familias en Acción has been doing great things and it is an honor to have been asked to be the keynote speaker this year,” says Sinsi Hernández-Cancio, Director of Health Equity at Families USA.
